    Medical Lien

A legal claim that lets a healthcare provider get paid out of a personal injury settlement instead of at the time of treatment.

A medical lien is the financial backbone of the personal injury (PI) ecosystem. When a patient is injured in an accident and has no health insurance — or chooses not to use it — a provider can treat them now and secure payment later by attaching a lien to the eventual settlement or judgment.

How it works. The patient (and often their attorney) signs a lien document agreeing that the provider will be paid directly from any recovery, before the patient receives their share. This lets injured people get care they couldn't otherwise afford, and lets providers treat PI patients without billing health insurance.

Why it matters. A lien is only as strong as its paperwork. Missing signatures, dates, or an itemized balance can delay payment for months or invite reductions at settlement. Clean execution and a current ledger protect the provider's recovery.
